Tulsi Gabbard’s Resignation and Husband’s Health Update

Tulsi Gabbard’s Heartfelt Announcement: A Personal Struggle and Professional Transition

In a touching post shared on social media platform X, Tulsi Gabbard, the outgoing Director of National Intelligence (DNI), provided a heartfelt update regarding her husband, Abraham Williams. Gabbard disclosed that Williams is currently recovering at home following a nearly seven-hour surgery related to a rare condition known as a “sacral chordoma.”

A Challenging Diagnosis

“My husband Abraham was diagnosed with a very rare sacral chordoma,” Gabbard wrote in her post. “The surgery lasted almost seven hours and was successful.” Despite the success of the operation, she shared that he experienced a difficult night and is in considerable pain, but is now at home resting as the recovery process begins.

Resignation to Support Family

This announcement came as Gabbard had recently revealed her decision to resign from her role as DNI to devote her attention to her husband’s battle against what she termed “an extremely rare form of bone cancer,” earlier reported by Fox News Digital.

In mid-May, during a meeting in the Oval Office, Gabbard notified President Donald Trump of her impending resignation, which was set to take effect at the end of June. “We’re so grateful for the outpouring of prayers and kind messages from all of you,” she expressed in her Thursday post, which included the specifics of her husband’s diagnosis for the first time. “Our hearts are full.”

Transition in Leadership

Following Gabbard’s announcement, Trump appointed Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as the acting DNI to succeed her. In a post on Truth Social, Trump noted that Pulte will also maintain his roles at the Federal Housing Finance Agency and as Chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac during this transition.

Background of Tulsi Gabbard

Since assuming office in February 2025, Gabbard has held the title of Director of National Intelligence, having previously served multiple terms in Congress as a Democrat before transitioning to independent status and ultimately joining the Republican Party. She is also a U.S. Army Reserve officer and a combat veteran, embodying a unique blend of political and military experience.

A Letter of Gratitude

In her formal resignation letter—obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital—Gabbard expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her during her tenure. “Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” she wrote, explaining that her husband’s recent diagnosis necessitated her full attention to him as he faces significant challenges in the months ahead. Her letter detailed her commitment to her husband, stating, “At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.”

The Personal Toll of Public Service

Gabbard reflected on the steadfast support her husband provided throughout their eleven years of marriage, emphasizing his unwavering presence during her deployments and numerous political campaigns. She voiced her struggle with the decision to step down from a demanding position in order to provide the necessary support for her husband during this trying phase.

Trump’s Supportive Response

Responding to Gabbard’s resignation, Trump praised her decision, acknowledging the importance of supporting family during difficult times. He expressed confidence in her and her husband’s future, stating, “I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her.”

Understanding Sacral Chordoma

A sacral chordoma is classified as a rare and slow-growing cancerous tumor located in the sacrum, the triangular bone located at the base of the spine. The National Cancer Institute further explains that chordomas can develop at various points along the spine and at the base of the skull, marking them as notably unusual in occurrence.

This update from Gabbard highlights the personal struggle interwoven with her professional life, illustrating the challenges faced by individuals juggling public service and family health crises. As her husband begins the journey of recovery, Gabbard’s commitment to family resonates deeply with many who face similar situations.
