Trump attacks DEI policies after DC plane crash, says FAA employees must be held to ‘highest standards’

Trump Critiques FAA Standards After Collision

Trump Targets FAA’s Diversity and Inclusion Standards Following Fatal Collision

In a press conference at the White House, former President Donald Trump expressed his concerns regarding the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) hiring practices under current administration policies, specifically addressing the implications of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standards following a tragic in-air collision near Washington D.C.

The Collision Incident

On Wednesday night, a devastating accident occurred when an American Airlines flight collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter just outside Reagan National Airport. The commercial aircraft was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the military helicopter had three service members on board. Unfortunately, Trump confirmed there were no survivors resulting from this tragic incident.

Trump’s Concerns Over Aviation Standards

During his press briefing, Trump highlighted ongoing efforts by the Biden administration to amend aviation standards, suggesting they have sought to lower qualifications and compromise safety in air traffic control. “We must have only the highest standards for those who work in our aviation system,” Trump asserted, emphasizing the necessity of having what he termed “the highest intellect” in roles critical to air safety.

“Only the highest aptitude – you have to be the highest intellect – and psychologically superior people, were allowed to qualify for air traffic controllers,” he continued, stressing that qualifications should focus on talent and intellect rather than demographic factors. “What matters is intellect, talent. The word talent. They have to be talented geniuses; we can’t have regular people doing that job. They won’t be able to do it,” Trump warned.

The Policy Shift

Trump stated he had previously raised the qualification standards for air traffic controllers during his tenure in office but claimed that President Biden subsequently lowered them. He mentioned that just last week, he reinstated these higher standards through an executive order. “We do not know what led to this crash, but we have some very strong opinions and ideas,” Trump remarked, underscoring a common sentiment among some critics that recent policy shifts could jeopardize aviation safety.

Diversity and Inclusion at the FAA

Trump went on to criticize the FAA’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, which he claimed led to the recruitment of workers with severe intellectual disabilities and psychiatric issues. He cited articles discussing what he called the agency’s “diversity push” before he took office, stating, “The FAA is actively recruiting workers who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website.”

While these claims reflect concerns voiced during Trump’s press conference, it’s important to note that the language regarding DEI initiatives was present during Biden’s administration and Trump’s first term. When approached for clarification last year on the role of people with disabilities within the FAA, the agency reiterated its commitment to thoroughly vet qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds for various positions.

Political Backlash

Trump’s harsh critique extended to former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whom he labeled a “disaster.” Critics echoed this sentiment, including Buttigieg himself, who quickly took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to respond to the allegations. “As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying,” Buttigieg stated, defending the administration’s record on aviation safety. He underscored the success of the FAA under his stewardship, claiming, “We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch.”

Ongoing Investigation

Despite his bold assertions, Trump acknowledged that the investigation into the crash is still ongoing. Reporters pressed him on whether he had specific evidence linking incompetence to DEI policies as a cause for the accident. While asserting the ongoing nature of the investigation, Trump conceded, “It could have been,” suggesting that the intersection of aviation safety and hiring practices will continue to be a point of contention in political discourse.

Conclusion

As this situation continues to unfold, it highlights a larger debate surrounding aviation standards and regulatory practices amid a backdrop of tragic loss. The intersection of safety regulations, hiring practices, and political rhetoric remains a critical issue for stakeholders in the aviation industry. Trump’s comments and the subsequent response from current administration officials reveal deep divisions on how best to ensure safety while fostering an inclusive workforce.
