New Restaurant at Obama Presidential Center Honors Tafari Campbell
Former President Barack Obama has announced that his new presidential center will pay tribute to the late Tafari Campbell, a cherished family friend and personal chef, with the establishment of a comfort-food restaurant.
Remembering Tafari Campbell
In a press release issued on Monday, the Obama Foundation revealed plans for the restaurant, which will honor Campbell, an award-winning culinary talent who served the Obama family and tragically passed away in July 2023.
Campbell, 45, drowned while paddleboarding on Edgartown Great Pond near the Obamas’ home on Martha’s Vineyard. Authorities confirmed that he was not wearing a life vest at the time of the incident.
The Obamas have long regarded Campbell as a “beloved part of our family,” reflecting the close relationship cultivated over the years.
Tafari’s Kitchen: A Culinary Tribute
The forthcoming restaurant, aptly named Tafari’s Kitchen, will serve dishes inspired by the Obama family’s personal stories and backgrounds. Notable items on the menu will include “Mrs. Robinson’s Red Rice,” a beloved family recipe from Michelle Obama’s late mother, Marian Robinson.
Chicago-based chef Cliff Rome and Bon Appétit Management are set to develop the restaurant’s menu, ensuring that it reflects the warmth and joy Campbell brought to the kitchen.
A painting of Campbell by renowned actress Kate Capshaw will grace the restaurant, serving as a permanent tribute to his legacy.
A Lasting Legacy
Tafari Campbell’s culinary journey began under the administration of George W. Bush, where he initially joined the White House culinary team. His popularity and rapport with the Obamas led to him becoming their personal chef after they took office.
Following the end of the Obama administration in 2017, Campbell remained a trusted member of the family, contributing to their household and culinary experiences.
At the time of his unfortunate accident, a witness reported that Campbell had lost his balance while on his paddleboard, leading to the tragic incident.
Tributes from the Obamas
The Obamas expressed their grief shortly after Campbell’s passing: “When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter,” they shared in a heartfelt statement.
They further reflected on his lasting impact: “That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”
Upcoming Opening of the Obama Presidential Center
The Obama Presidential Center is set to officially open its doors on June 19, marking the culmination of over a decade of development. Throughout this process, the project faced scrutiny concerning its design, budget, and the public funds utilized for infrastructure improvements in the surrounding areas.
Reports indicate that taxpayers have contributed hundreds of millions of dollars toward public infrastructure upgrades, which included construction of new roads, transit updates, and utility improvements around the center.
Fox News Digital made attempts to reach out to the Obama Foundation for further comment regarding the new restaurant and its significance.
