At least 26 Palestinians reportedly lost their lives and approximately 175 others sustained injuries while attempting to receive food aid in the Gaza Strip, according to officials from the Hamas-run health ministry and eyewitness accounts. Witnesses allege that Israeli forces opened fire on crowds located about 1,000 yards from an aid distribution site managed by the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. A Palestinian journalist, speaking to the BBC, described a chaotic scene where thousands had gathered near the aid site in Rafah when Israeli tanks arrived and commenced firing.

In response, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated they are “currently unaware of injuries caused by IDF fire within the Humanitarian Aid distribution site,” emphasizing that the situation is still under review.

Contradicting Reports from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation released a statement asserting that it delivered 16 truckloads of aid “without incident” on Sunday morning. The foundation strongly denied earlier reports of violence and chaos surrounding its locations, which are within designated Israeli military zones with limited access for independent observers.

In their statement, they dismissed what they termed “false reporting about deaths, mass injuries, and chaos,” arguing that their private security personnel did not fire on the gathered crowds. The Israeli military previously noted instances of firing warning shots in related incidents.

Chaos Erupts During Aid Distribution

As the aid distribution unfolded, chaos ensued with multiple witnesses claiming that Israeli troops aimed fire at crowds gathered near the delivery points. Prior to this latest incident, local health officials confirmed that at least six individuals had been killed and more than 50 injured during similar distributions.

Reports indicate that thousands began moving towards the humanitarian aid site before dawn, where Israeli forces instructed them to disperse and return later. By 3 a.m., witnesses recount that the military opened fire from the vicinity of the Flag Roundabout, roughly 1,000 yards away.

Amr Abu Teiba, a witness present at the scene, described the harrowing atmosphere: “There was fire from all directions, from naval warships, tanks, and drones.” He reported seeing at least 10 people with gunshot wounds and numerous others injured, including women, with victims being transported to a field hospital in makeshift carts.

Another witness, Ibrahim Abu Saoud, corroborated Abu Teiba’s narrative, stating, “I saw many with gunshot wounds,” including a young man who succumbed to his injuries on-site. Mohammed Abu Teaima recounted a personal tragedy when he witnessed Israeli forces shoot his cousin, who was hit in the chest and died immediately, along with numerous others sustaining injuries, including his brother-in-law.

In his testimony, Abu Teaima addressed the aggression of Israeli forces, stating, “They opened heavy fire directly towards us.” Such accounts paint a grim picture of the frantic and tragic circumstances as civilians sought aid during a humanitarian crisis.

Both Israel and the United States, which provides support to the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, maintain that the aid distribution system is designed to prevent supplies from being commandeered by Hamas.
