Located in a 15-story building along US Route 101, the Dream Center was purchased for .9 million from the Catholic Church nearly three decades ago. This significant structure, originally a filming location, now serves as a refuge for 700 residents daily, including homeless veterans, emancipated minors, and families in distress.
“We thought in a city like Los Angeles, known as a 24/7 city, why not have a place that could really help pick up the broken pieces of dreams for those hurting and struggling,” Barnett shared, highlighting the organization’s commitment to serve those in need.
Rising to the Occasion Amid Crisis
The ongoing wildfires have resulted in an overwhelming demand for the services provided by the Dream Center. “You take on 20% more growth on your campus overnight. That’s a lot in a city like Los Angeles,” Barnett explained, underscoring the unique challenges of operating in an area with a high cost of living.
Open 24 hours a day, the Dream Center is currently at full capacity, offering private rooms, meals, and essential supplies for wildfire victims. Notably, renowned chef Wolfgang Puck recently donated 2,000 meals, which were distributed rapidly. “We just threw them right on the front line,” Barnett said, although the meals vanished within two hours due to the high demand.
“Then, someone else will step up, and we’ll put them on the front line, and a new restaurant will show up,” he added, reflecting the community’s robust support.

The enthusiasm and support from the community have been nothing short of miraculous, according to Barnett. “When you take care of hurting people, God has a way of just providing. It’s just miracle after miracle,” he noted, expressing gratitude for the many who have stepped up to assist.
The Dream Center’s relief efforts are bolstered by the mobilization of 250 volunteers daily who are working tirelessly to distribute truckloads of supplies and serve food lines for up to ten hours each day. Barnett has made comparisons to the heightened scale of these efforts with those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic but emphasized the urgency level has increased “times 10.”

Despite being directly affected by the fires himself, with Barnett currently staying in his office with his family and pets just blocks from the advancing flames, he remains dedicated to serving others. “We’re serving out of our own struggle,” he stated poignantly, driving home the personal connection many have with the current crisis.
