Mark Warner Grills Tulsi Gabbard Over Edward Snowden Remarks

On a recent Thursday morning, Virginia Senator Mark Warner, a prominent Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, challenged President Donald Trump’s nominee for Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Tulsi Gabbard. The confrontation centered around Gabbard’s past comments in favor of whistleblower Edward Snowden, raising significant concerns regarding national security and accountability.

Warner’s Tough Questions

“Until you are nominated by the president to be the DNI, you consistently praised the actions of Edward Snowden, someone, I believe, jeopardized the security of our nation and then, to flaunt that, fled to Russia,” Warner stated, probing Gabbard about her previous remarks. He further pointed out her description of Snowden as a “brave whistleblower” and expressed his vehement disagreement with that characterization.

Warner went on to align himself with the sentiments of committee chairman, asserting, “Every member of this committee supports the rights of legal whistleblowers. But Edward Snowden isn’t a whistleblower, and in this case, I’m a lot closer to the chairman’s words where he said Snowden is, quote, ‘an egotistical serial liar and traitor’ who, quote, ‘deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his life.’” He pressed Gabbard with a direct inquiry: “Do you still think Edward Snowden is brave?”

Gabbard’s Response

In defense of her earlier statements, Gabbard acknowledged that while Snowden “broke the law,” she did not endorse the manner in which he leaked classified intelligence. “Mr. Vice Chairman, Edward Snowden broke the law. I do not agree with or support with all of the information and intelligence that he released… There would have been opportunities for him to come to you on this committee, or seek out the IG to release that information,” she asserted.

Gabbard was rapid in her defense, stating that despite the illegal actions taken by Snowden, some vital information regarding government surveillance practices was disclosed. “The fact is, he also, even as he broke the law, released information that exposed egregious, illegal and unconstitutional programs that are happening within our government,” she elaborated.
