In his letter to the FBI staff, Patel expressed gratitude for his nomination and confirmation. “I am honored to have been nominated and confirmed as your new Director,” he wrote. Patel emphasized his extensive experience in government service, particularly in national security, stating that he has worked collaboratively with the FBI throughout his career. “My commitment has always been — and always will be — to pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law,” he affirmed, outlining his intent to maintain this dedication in his new role.

Patel reinforced the FBI’s mission to keep Americans safe, both domestically and internationally, labeling it a “no-fail mission.” This commitment will shape his priorities as he takes on his responsibilities in the coming months.

Priorities for a New Era

Background in National Security

Patel brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served during the first Trump administration as a deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism. He played a significant role in key operations aimed at dismantling high-profile al Qaeda and ISIS leadership, including contributing to the mission that resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi. In these capacities, Patel was also involved in efforts to capture some of the most-wanted terrorists for prosecution in the U.S.

Prior to assuming the directorship at the FBI, Patel served as the principal deputy at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). His oversight included managing the transition of leadership in the office and focusing on issues related to counter-narcotics and transnational threats. His earlier roles included serving as a national security advisor and senior counsel for counterterrorism on the House Intelligence Committee, where he led investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, highlighting instances of FISA abuse and unlawful surveillance of American citizens, including members of the Trump campaign.
