The most decorated K-9 in U.S. history, Hurricane, a 15-year-old Belgian Malinois, passed away on Tuesday, concluding more than a decade of service with the United States Secret Service. His contributions, both in the line of duty and beyond, have solidified his status as a remarkable figure in the realm of law enforcement and canine service.

The White House hailed Hurricane’s contributions through a tribute on their X account, stating, “Hurricane was a true American hero. The most decorated K-9 in U.S. history, he bravely defended the White House and spent retirement helping other working dogs through @Hurricane_K9. His legacy of courage and loyalty will live on. Rest easy, Hurricane.”

National Prominence

Hurricane first gained national attention in October 2014 when he played a critical role in thwarting a White House intruder. Dominic Adesanya had breached the White House fence and entered the North Lawn during the Obama administration while the former president and First Lady watched a movie mere yards away. The situation escalated when Hurricane and another Secret Service dog, Jordan, responded to the breach.

In a fierce encounter, Hurricane wrestled the intruder to the ground, showcasing his bravery despite suffering injuries during the altercation. Hurricane’s handler, Marshall Mirarchi, recounted the intensity of the incident, saying, “He beat Hurricane really bad. But Hurricane did not give up.” The incident served as a testament to Hurricane’s remarkable courage and tenacity in protecting the Presidential residence.

A Decorated Career

Bearing a legacy built on bravery and excellence, Hurricane was born in 2009 and began his service as a special operations canine for the Secret Service in 2012, continuing until 2016. During his tenure, he received numerous accolades for his service, including the Award for Meritorious Service from the Secret Service in 2014 and the Secretary’s Award for Valor from the Department of Homeland Security in 2015. In 2022, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, further underscoring his exceptional contributions to national security.

Uniformed Division Assistant Chief Michael Buck reflected on Hurricane’s legacy during the Distinguished Service Medal ceremony, stating, “On every shift of every day, we at the Secret Service strive to uphold five core values; Duty, Honor, Loyalty, Justice, and Courage. They are the five points of our agency’s star, and on a dark night in October 2014, they were embodied by a very good boy named Hurricane.”

Retirement and Legacy

Following the injuries he sustained during the 2014 incident, Hurricane retired in 2016, entering a new chapter of life after a heroic career. Mirarchi took it upon himself to adopt Hurricane, ensuring that the courageous canine would live out his days surrounded by love and care.

Reflecting on Hurricane’s multifaceted personality, Mirarchi shared, “What made Hurricane so special was that he could be so ferocious and brave, yet be so loving and kind at the same time. He could be biting and doing apprehension all day long, and when he comes home, he was this loving, caring, kind soul.”

In the weeks leading to his passing, Hurricane returned to the White House one final time, where he had a heartfelt reunion with his former team, paying tribute to his years of service.
