Texas Lawmaker Introduces Immigration Bill Amid Push for Enforcement

FIRST ON FOX: In a bold move aimed at fortifying the collaboration between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and local law enforcement agencies, a Texas lawmaker has unveiled a new bill in light of the Trump administration’s ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration.

The 287(g) Program Protection Act

Rep. Michael Cloud, a Republican representing Texas, is spearheading the introduction of The 287(g) Program Protection Act. This proposed legislation is centered on Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which authorizes ICE to delegate specific immigration enforcement tasks to state and local law enforcement officers. These tasks include the identification and detention of individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants.

Following the change in administration, the Biden administration halted the onboarding of applications into the 287(g) program in 2021. According to Cloud’s office, the current administration has not approved any new agreements since its pause, resulting in a significant shift in immigration enforcement strategy.

Cloud is adamant that his bill will not only restore what he perceives as the role of law and order in immigration but will also empower local law enforcement to work closely with ICE in effectively managing illegal immigration.

Sheriff Roy Boyd of Goliad County, Texas, praised Cloud’s efforts, calling the bill a “momentous step in the right direction.” He noted that it would facilitate an unprecedented level of cooperation among local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, enhancing overall effectiveness in enforcing immigration laws.
