Sen. Ted Cruz Predicts Plummeting Illegal Immigration Post-Trump Inauguration

In a recent interview, Senator Ted Cruz expressed optimism about a significant decrease in illegal immigration after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Cruz’s Forecast on Immigration

During a Sunday morning appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Senator Cruz, a Republican from Texas, made bold predictions regarding immigration patterns under Trump’s leadership. He stated that illegal immigration rates would begin to “plummet” immediately following Trump’s inauguration. Cruz pointed to Trump’s intention to reinstate the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy as a key factor that would drive down immigration levels.

“I expect we will once again enter into ‘Remain in Mexico,’ and we are going to see – I’m going to make a prediction right now: We will see the numbers plummet of illegal immigration coming into this country,” Cruz declared. “Not in a year, not in six months, but in January and February, because we will have a president who will vigorously enforce the law.” This assertion aligns with the staunch immigration policies Trump advocated during his previous term in office.

Engagement with Mexican Leadership

Cruz also highlighted Trump’s approach towards Mexico’s government and the use of tariffs as a strategy to gain compliance in border security efforts. Recent communications between Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have shown a willingness from Mexico to cooperate with the U.S. in stopping the flow of illegal crossings.

“I’ll tell you what hasn’t changed is the importance of leverage,” Cruz emphasized. He praised Trump’s threats regarding tariffs on both Mexico and Canada, crediting this approach for prompting concrete dialogue and promises from Mexico to collaborate with the U.S. on border security measures.

Collaborative Discussions with Canada

In addition to his Mexican counterpart, Trump has also been proactive in addressing immigration issues with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump recently described his meeting with Trudeau as “very productive” during an unannounced visit to Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The meeting came shortly after Trump had threatened to impose 25% tariffs on both countries for failing to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S.

During their discussion, Trump outlined critical topics affecting both countries, including the ongoing fentanyl crisis linked to drug cartels and the importance of establishing fair trade agreements that protect American workers. “We discussed many important topics that will require both countries to work together to address, like the fentanyl and drug crisis,” Trump elaborated through his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “I made it very clear that the United States will no longer sit idly by as our citizens become victims to the scourge of this drug epidemic, caused mainly by the drug cartels, and fentanyl pouring in from China. Too much death and hardship!” He noted that Trudeau committed to working alongside him to combat these critical issues that deeply affect U.S. families.
