Senate Moves Forward with Doug Burgum’s Nomination for Interior Secretary
On Wednesday, the Senate voted to advance President Donald Trump’s nomination of former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to lead the Department of the Interior. The decision sets the stage for a final confirmation vote that could significantly impact energy policy in the United States.

Doug Burgum served as the governor of North Dakota from 2016 until 2024, a period during which he gained recognition for his focus on energy and natural resource management — issues that he has pledged to prioritize as Interior Secretary. However, after participating in the first two Republican presidential debates, Burgum was unable to qualify for the third debate and ultimately suspended his campaign in December 2023.
