Trump and Trudeau Discuss Key Issues in Recent Call
Leaders touch on Ukraine conflict, U.S.-Canada relations, and border security
Warm Welcome Despite Tensions
President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in a notable phone conversation this past Saturday, touching upon a plethora of issues. The dialogue covered everything from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to critical discussions about U.S. border security.
In a statement released by the White House, it was revealed that the leaders commenced their call by celebrating Canada’s recent triumph in the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey tournament. Both leaders expressed pride in their respective teams, who fiercely competed in the championship.
Ukraine War: A Central Topic
The discussion shifted to a more serious tone as they turned their focus to the impending G7 call set for Monday. This call is particularly significant as it will mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Trudeau echoed Trump’s sentiments, advocating for an end to the conflict. Notably, the Canadian Prime Minister recognized Trump as the only world leader capable of facilitating a “just and lasting peace.”
During their conversation, Trump asserted that the war in Ukraine should have never happened, suggesting that it would have been avoided had he been in office during the onset of the conflict.
Border Security: A Sensitive Subject
The leaders proceeded to address the delicate issue of U.S. border security. This topic has become increasingly sensitive for Canadian officials, especially in light of Trump’s previous imposition of tariffs related to drug trafficking concerns at the U.S.-Canada border. Despite agreeing to pause these tariffs for 30 days on February 3, they are set to resume early next month.
Trudeau highlighted Canada’s efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis, boasting a 90% reduction in the trafficking of the drug across the border. He revealed that Canada’s border czar is slated to meet with U.S. border chief Tom Homan in Washington next week to discuss ongoing security measures.
Strained Relations Amid Tensions
It’s worth noting the backdrop of their discussions; recent weeks have seen a strain in the relationship between Trump and Trudeau, primarily due to the aforementioned tariffs and Trump’s controversial suggestion that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state. Earlier this month, Trudeau expressed concern that Trump might genuinely entertain the idea of annexing Canada.
“I suggest that not only does the Trump administration know how many critical minerals we have, but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state,” Trudeau remarked, as reported by CBC.
Concerns Over Trade Imbalance
Trump has frequently voiced his grievances regarding the trade deficit the U.S. incurs with Canada. He insists that “there is no reason” for this imbalance and that the U.S. could wholly sustain itself without Canadian resources. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited energy, should make our own cars, and have more lumber than we can ever use.”
The former president further added, “Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country. Harsh but true!” He suggested that Canada might benefit from becoming “our Cherished 51st State,” touting lower taxes and improved military protection.
A Light-Hearted Exchange
Amid the serious undertones of their conversation, Trudeau also took a moment to inject some humor. Following Canada’s victory in the hockey tournament, he tweeted a cheeky response, asserting, “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game,” highlighting the nation’s pride in both its sovereignty and its sports.
