National Geographic Announces the Best of the World Travel List for 2026
Explore the must-visit destinations that are redefining travel experiences across the globe.
Spotlight on American Wonders
In its annual Best of the World travel list, National Geographic has highlighted an eclectic mix of destinations worldwide. For 2026, the list includes four captivating locations in the United States: North Dakota, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Pennsylvania. Each of these states offers unique attractions that reflect the diversity of the American landscape and culture.
Discovering North Dakota’s Badlands
North Dakota’s Badlands stand out for their stunning and rugged topography, featuring a blend of hills, canyons, and striking rock formations. This natural wonder is not just a feast for the eyes but is integrated into America’s conservation history.
The area encompasses Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a place that profoundly influenced the conservationist views of President Roosevelt himself. To commemorate this legacy, the Theodore Roosevelt National Library is set to open on July 4, 2026. Spanning an impressive 93,000 square feet, the library will be perched on a butte in Medora and include interactive exhibits that focus on Roosevelt’s life and travels. Visitors will appreciate a walkable roof adorned with native vegetation, leading to a scenic 1.3-mile trail that connects to the national park.
Oklahoma’s Route 66: A Journey Through Time
Celebrating its centennial in 2026, America’s iconic Route 66, commonly known as the “Mother Road,” winds its way through Oklahoma, promising travelers a nostalgic experience. The state has invested over $82 million to rejuvenate this historic stretch, enhancing its neon signs, retro motor courts, and beloved roadside attractions.
A trip down Route 66 through the Meadow Gold District on 11th Street showcases an array of indie retailers, art galleries, and unique gift shops. In Clinton, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum features a charming 1950s diner with exhibits that recount the rich history of the road. This revitalization aims to provide an “Americana glow-up” that combines the past with modern enhancements, making it a must-visit for both history buffs and new travelers alike.
Hawaii: A Serene Sanctuary
Hawaii offers a tranquil escape renowned for its breathtaking beaches and azure waters. However, the islands are still recovering from the devastating wildfires that struck Maui in 2023, causing over $5 billion in damages and claiming more than 100 lives, notably impacting the historic town of Lahaina.
Despite the challenges, many local businesses have reopened, and National Geographic urges travelers to contribute to the recovery efforts. With tourist numbers down, visitors now have the opportunity to explore the islands without the usual crowds, allowing for a more intimate experience of Hawaii’s beauty.
Accommodations such as the Grand Wailea hotel offer Hawaii’s largest spa, while the Wailea Beach Resort has modernized its facilities, introducing an adults-only sanctuary and an infinity pool to enhance visitors’ relaxation. Additionally, “voluntourism” opportunities are available, encouraging guests to participate in beach cleanups and native plant restoration hikes, merging leisure with service.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: A Cultural Hub
Pittsburgh has emerged as a vibrant cultural destination, making it a noteworthy addition to the Best of the World list. The city boasts a lively arts scene and diverse museum offerings. Notable institutions include the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, with the Carnegie International set to return in 2026 to showcase contemporary artwork from around the globe.
The Andy Warhol Museum, part of Pittsburgh’s Pop District, has expanded thanks to a $60 million addition, which includes a new performing arts venue, reflecting the city’s commitment to the arts. Furthermore, the National Aviary, regarded as an “underrated attraction,” offers visitors the chance to experience free-flight habitats featuring hundreds of avian species.
Pittsburgh’s extensive redevelopment includes 90 unique neighborhoods, with revitalized dining hubs and urban parks that add to the city’s charm and appeal, making it an ideal stop for those interested in both culture and community.
